About Ede Staal

Dutch folk singer from the province of Groningen. Most of his songs are in the dialect of this province, a language related to the other "Platt-duutsch"-dialects of the eastern Netherlands and northern Germany. The songs deal with the lives of people and places in the countryside of Groningen. Ede Staal (born on August 2nd 1941) recorded his first single in 1973, though his first real success didn’t come until 1982, when his song 'Mien Toentje' (My Garden) became very popular as the jingle of a gardening show on a local radio station, Radio Noord. This led to the release of his first full length album in 1984, called 'Mien Toentje'. 'Mien Toentje' became an overwhelming success, even on a national level, something unheard of for dialect music. While working on his second album, Ede got diagnosed with lung cancer and died on July 22nd 1986. Nevertheless his second LP, 'As Vaaier Woorden' (When Four Words), was released in October of the same year and managed to live up to all high expectations. Despite his early death, Ede became an icon for dialect music, especially in Groningen where he still has a large fan base.
