Dolly Roll was a pioneering Hungarian pop and rock 'n' roll band, celebrated for their energetic blend of rockabilly, pop, and retro influences that captured the spirit of 1950s American rock while infusing Hungarian flair. Formed in Budapest in 1983 from former members of the iconic band Hungária, they became one of Hungary's most beloved acts, selling over five million records in their first three decades. Their music often featured upbeat, danceable tracks with themes of love, summer fun, and nostalgia, led by the charismatic vocals of frontwoman "Dolly" (Ilona Mária Penczi). The band toured extensively, performed at massive venues like Budapest's Népstadion (drawing nearly 100,000 fans in 1995), and even collaborated internationally, notably with American rockabilly legend Wanda Jackson. After 34 years of activity, lead singer Dolly announced the band's disbandment in February 2017, marking the end of an era, though she later formed Dolly Plus in 2018 with new members. Dolly Roll's sound—chirpy rock 'n' roll with infectious hooks—helped popularize the genre in Eastern Europe during the 1980s transition to democracy. Frontwoman Dolly, born May 21, 1948, remains a "rock 'n' roll queen" at 77, active with Dolly Plus (members: Dolly, Frigyes Erdélyi, Ferenc Schüszler, Erik Kovács, Dániel Doba, Tamás Palcsó).
