About Dmitry Sitkovetsky

Dmitry Sitkovetsk was born in Baku, Azerbaijan to violinist Julian Sitkovetsky and pianist Bella Davidovich. His father died in 1958, when Sitkovetsky was three years old. He grew up in Moscow. He studied there at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1977, aged twenty-two, he decided he wanted to leave the Soviet Union. To that end, he registered himself as mentally ill. His plan worked and he arrived at New York on September 11, 1977. He immediately entered the Juilliard School. In 1979 he won first prize in the Kreisler Competition in Vienna. From then on he has appeared as soloist with renowned orchestras around the world. He has also appeared at the Salzburg, Lucerne, Edinburgh and other festivals. He has also appeared at recitals with his mother, Bella Davidovich. He was the Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Ulster Orchestra from 1996 to 2001 and was Conductor Laureate of the orchestra for a year after that. Since 2003, he is Music Director of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Russian State Symphony in Moscow. He has also conducted other orchestras around the world.
