About Die Nerven
Die Nerven ("The Nerves" or "they're annoying") are a three-piece post-punk/noise rock/indie rock band from Stuttgart which formed in 2010. Members: ** Vocals & Guitar: Max Rieger ** Vocals & Bass: Julian Knoth ** Drums:Kevin Kuhn (since 2012) Former members: Drums: Philipp Knoth (2010–2012) Biography: Die Nerven started out in early 2010 in Esslingen am Neckar as a lo-fi project by Julian Knoth on bass and vocals and Max Rieger on guitar and vocals. Together with drummer Philipp Knoth they put out a series of MP3 albums between 2010 and 2012. Their demo Asoziale Medien opened the door to a deal with the independent label This Charming Man Records. In 2012 drummer Kevin Kuhn joined and the group continued as a trio. That same year their album Fluidum came out on This Charming Man. Their next record Fun, produced by Ralv Milberg, became their breakthrough in 2014. It drew wide praise in the music press. The band Tocotronic appeared in the video for the song Angst, playing versions of Die Nerven. The group played major festivals like Roskilde and Melt and toured extensively, including in Israel. That tour became the documentary Die Nerven in Israel by Simon Heinze and Florian Krauss. On 9 October 2015 their third album Out appeared on Glitterhouse Records. In 2016 they created the music for a production of Die Erfindung der Roten Armee Fraktion durch einen manisch depressiven Teenager im Sommer 1969, staged in Berlin and Stuttgart. Their first double live album, Live in Europa, followed in June 2017 with recordings from the Out tour. The tight space in Stuttgart, along with a lack of rehearsal rooms and creative niches, eventually pushed Kuhn to move to Berlin. Rieger went first to Leipzig, then also to Berlin. Knoth stayed, tied to his personal connections there. Management and crew are now based in Berlin as well. In October 2017 the Goethe-Institut brought the band to Washington, D.C. Their fourth album Fake came out on 20 April 2018. It was recorded in Tuscany in a mobile studio run by Ralv Milberg and reached number 13 on the German charts. The band loosened its sound, writing songs that were more melodic and pop-leaning than before. Kuhn described this as an intuitive shift. The fifth album, simply titled Die Nerven, was released on 7 October 2022 and reached number 17. Critics again received it warmly, some calling it the peak of their work so far. The sixth album, Wir waren hier, followed on 13 September 2024. The magazine Der Berliner described it as electrifying noise rock with rich production. In 2024 they released their album Wir waren hier followed by a live album called LIVE IM ELFENBEINTURM in 2025 accompanied by a tour. Style: Die Nerven mix strands of punk and post punk with German lyrics that are skeptical and set against social pressures. Their sound shows the influence of Sonic Youth and also the weight of bands like Black Sabbath. Their cover of Lana Del Reys Summertime Sadness, reworked as Sommerzeit, Traurigkeit, hits harder and cuts away the melancholy of the original. Side projects: All three members are active elsewhere. Max Rieger releases solo work as All Diese Gewatl and also produces records for other artists. He is part of the experimental trio Jauche and puts out black metal under the name Obstler. Kevin Kuhn plays in Karies, Wolf Mountains and the Berlin band Scharping. Julian Knoth runs the projects Yum Yum Club and Peter Muffin Trio, both with his brother Philipp on drums. With Peter Muffin he released the album Ich und meine 1000 Freunde in 2017. Improvisation is central to his approach. Together with Thomas Westner of Friends of Gas he runs the label Butzen, which puts out cassette releases of bands they find interesting. He is also part of Die Benjamins with Annette Benjamin (Hans-A-Plast, Thomas Götz (Beatsteaks), Max Gruber (Drangsal) and Charlotte Brandi.
