About Dave Cousins

Dave Cousins (born David Joseph Cousins in Hounslow, Middlesex, on 7 January 1945; died 13 July 2025) was an English musician remembered as the leader, singer and most active songwriter of Strawbs since 1967. He also performed and recorded as the much-in-demand acoustic duo Dave Cousins & Brian Willoughby (with Strawbs guitarist Brian Willoughby) and regularly toured with Acoustic Strawbs. Cousins was a founding member of Strawbs, which started out as the Strawberry Hill Boys playing bluegrass music before moving on to folk, folk-rock, and progressive rock. His first solo album, Two Weeks Last Summer (with Roger Glover, Rick Wakeman, Dave Lambert, etc), was released in 1972. His next two albums "Old School Songs" (1980) and The Bridge (1994) were by Dave Cousins & Brian Willoughby. He later released "The Boy in the Sailor Suit" (2007) and "Secret Paths" (2008). In December 2021, Cousins announced his withdrawal from live performance for health reasons. On 11 August 2023 Dave Cousins, and Strawbs, gave their final live show and farewell gig at Fairport's Cropredy Convention.
