About The Cranberries

The Cranberries were an Irish rock band formed in Limerick in 1989. The group consisted of lead vocalist and guitarist Dolores O’Riordan, guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan, and drummer Fergal Lawler. O’Riordan joined the band in 1990, replacing founding member Niall Quinn, and the group’s name was shortened from The Cranberry Saw Us to The Cranberries following her arrival. Although primarily classified as an alternative rock band, their music incorporated elements of indie rock, jangle pop, dream pop, folk rock, post-punk, and pop rock. In 1991, The Cranberries signed with Island Records and released their debut album, "Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?" (1993), which achieved commercial success. Their second album, "No Need to Argue" (1994), brought them international recognition and featured the hit single "Zombie," which became one of their signature songs and an enduring protest anthem. The success continued with the albums "To the Faithful Departed" (1996) and "Bury the Hatchet" (1999). In 2000, the band signed with MCA Records and released their fifth album, "Wake Up and Smell the Coffee" (2001). The album received a mixed commercial response, and the band expressed dissatisfaction with its promotion. After a six-year hiatus beginning in 2003, The Cranberries reunited in 2009 for a North American tour, followed by concerts in Latin America and Europe. Their sixth studio album, "Roses," was released in 2012, marking their first new material in over a decade. In 2017, they released "Something Else," an acoustic and orchestral reinterpretation of earlier songs. Following O’Riordan’s death in 2018 from drowning due to alcohol intoxication, the remaining members decided to disband after completing work on their final album, "In the End" (2019), which was released posthumously to critical acclaim. The Cranberries were one of the best-selling alternative rock acts of the 1990s, with global album sales approaching 50 million as of 2019. The band received several major awards, including an Ivor Novello Award, a Juno Award, an MTV Europe Music Award, and a World Music Award, and they were nominated for both Brit and Grammy Awards. The music video for "Zombie" became the first by an Irish band to surpass one billion views on YouTube.
