About Congregación

Congregación (which has more listeners on last-fm under the unaccented version of the name Congregacion) was a seminal progressive folklore/psychedelic band formed by Antonio Smith in Valparaiso, Chile in 1970. They issued one LP Viene in 1972 on the IRT label. Smith relocated to Argentina in 1972. The album was produced by Julio Numhauser of the band Amerindios, and the large number of musicians included Eduardo Parra on piano and Gabriel Parra of the band Los Jaivas. Smith fled to Argentina when the coup d'etat overthrew the Allende government and he still resides there. He recorded two solo albums in Argentina and now records under the name Awankana in the New Age and Electronica idioms. The videos found on the Congregacion page seem to be associated with unrelated religious groups rather than with the Chilean band.
