Voices of the Big Easy is a fusion group melding various New Orleans musical genres and poetry into one. It starts with the poetry of Chuck Perkins, combined with Troy Sawyer on trumpet, Jessie Morrow on stand- up bass, Julian Garcia on drums and Hubie Vigreux on congas. In addition there are three Mardi Gras Indians: "Wildman" Ivory Holmes on congas, "Big Chief" Kentrell Watson, and “Flag Boy” Kenneth Bruce on vocals. Any combination of artistic expressions can be added during the show. Perkins is a favorite performer in Chicago, where he lived for ten years, and in New Orleans, to which he returned in 2002. Chuck has preformed with former Poet Laureate Mark Strand. He has also preformed with Mark Smith creator of the Poetry Slam, as well as Umar Bin Hassan of The Last Poets. He has headlined at the Guild Complex in Chicago, with his most notable show in tribute to Gil Scott Heron. He has also been featured in poetry venues, high schools, and colleges around the country. His poetry appears in the best selling anthology Spoken Word Revolution. He has hosted "Voices of the Big Easy" since early 2004 in some of New Orleans' more cutting edge venues: the Dragon's Den, Donna's, King Bolden's, Café Amelie, and Bacchanal. Voices of the Big Easy showcases a broad panorama of New Orleans' rich musical and literary culture, fusing performances that are alternately passionate and whimsical, poignant and fun. A Love Song For Nola is Chuck’s follow up CD to A Bucket of Questions.
