About Chubby Rae & The Elevators
In their 10 years together Chubby Rae & the Elevators have traveled the countryside playing at some of Australia’s most prestigious festivals including the East Coast Blues & Roots Festival – Byron Bay; the Apollo Bay Music Festival; the Port Fairy Folk Festival; the Gympie Muster; Blues at Bridgetown - WA; the Great Southern Blues & Rockabilly Festival – Narooma and Blues on Broadbeach – Gold Coast to name a few. After releasing their debut album Live at St. Andrews in 2003 the band was awarded Album of the Year at the 2007 Australian Blues Music Awards for their 2005 release She Gets Unruly and are currently working on material for a third album. Marisa Quigley grew up in Darwin moving there at the age of 6 and leaving in 1999 to pursue her musical career. She has a powerful, soulful voice and presence and loves to engage an audience. Marisa was awarded Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2007 Australian Blues Music Awards and has been described as “the blackest white woman since Janis Joplin”- Chris Lambie, Forte Magazine. After a wealth of experience with her band, Marisa is now also performing solo with her trusty acoustic guitar. With an eclectic blend of blues/roots, country/folk, a nudge and a wink, a tickle and a poke, her act is passionate, fun and endearing. Jim Dyson, guitar maker extraordinaire, delivers sweet, straight down the line blues licks and solid R’n’B rhythms on guitar and slide. Jim is the predominant songwriter of the band and was awarded Song of the Year for his composition Crazy Hot Rod at the MBAS 2003 Victorian Blues Music Awards. He is renowned for his smooth Jimmy Vaughn-esque guitar style and his snappy dressing. Karl Inderberg and Craig Chiller are the rock solid rhythm section and keep the band together through a slow, sleazy ballad, a hard driving shuffle or a jumpin’ blues bossa. Between them they have played with some of Australia’s finest blues bands and musicians and are the driving force of the band. The Blues Train Chubby Rae & the Elevators have been making converts to their vibed-up, good-time rhythm’n’blues since July 2000. Since then, Marisa Quigley (aka Chubby Rae), the 6’2” redheaded soulful powerhouse has been singing the blues like there’s no tomorrow. Their second album, She Gets Unruly won Album of the Year at the 2007 Australian Blues Music Awards and Marisa also took out the Female Vocalist of the Year award.
