About Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens was the name of a very famous author, but also the pseudonym used by a not-so-famous British pop singer of the mid-1960s. Here's some more information. Let's start with the writer... 1. Charles John Huffam Dickens FRSA (7 February 1812 – 9 June 1870), was the foremost English novelist of the Victorian era, as well as a vigorous social campaigner. Considered one of the English language's greatest writers, he was acclaimed for his rich storytelling and memorable characters, and achieved massive worldwide popularity in his lifetime. Later critics, beginning with George Gissing and G. K. Chesterton, championed his mastery of prose, his endless invention of memorable characters and his powerful social sensibilities. Yet he has also received criticism from writers such as George Henry Lewes, Henry James, and Virginia Woolf, who list sentimentality, implausible occurrence and grotesque characters as faults in his oeuvre. The popularity of Dickens' novels and short stories has meant that none have ever gone out of print. Dickens wrote serialised novels, which was the usual format for fiction at the time, and each new part of his stories would be eagerly anticipated by the reading public. 2. London-based fashion photographer David Anthony had aspirations to be a pop star and made three 45s in the United Kingdom during the mid-1960s, kicking off with 'That's the Way Love Goes' b/w 'In the City' (June 1965). The single, released on Pye Records, sold quite well, but a second one much less so, after which he moved to Andrew Loog Oldham's Immediate label for a third and final single in late 1965.
