About Crystal Gayle

Brenda Gail Webb (born January 9, 1951), known professionally as Crystal Gayle, is an American country music singer known for her 1977 hit "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue." Early in her career, Gayle shared management and a record label with her older sister Loretta Lynn. After several years with limited success, and with Lynn's encouragement, Gayle adopted a different musical direction. She signed a new recording contract and began working with Nashville producer Allen Reynolds. Her sound was often described as middle-of-the-road (MOR) or country pop, reflecting a broader trend in the 1970s in which country artists sought crossover appeal with mainstream pop audiences. Gayle became one of the most commercially successful crossover artists of the 1970s and 1980s. She is also known for her floor-length hair. Gayle began her recording career in the late 1960s and signed with Decca Records in 1970 with the assistance of Loretta Lynn. After modest early success, she developed her own musical identity. Under the production of Allen Reynolds at United Artists Records, Gayle moved toward a country pop style that proved more commercially successful. In 1975, "Wrong Road Again" became her first major hit. Her greatest success came in 1977 with "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue," which topped the Billboard country chart, reached the top five of the Billboard Hot 100, and achieved international popularity. Gayle continued to have successful recordings from the late 1970s through the late 1980s. Among her best-known hits are "Ready for the Times to Get Better" (1977), "Talking in Your Sleep" (1978), "Half the Way" (1979), and "You and I" (1982). During the 1990s she explored additional musical styles, including inspirational music on the album "Someday" (1995) and traditional pop standards on "Crystal Gayle Sings the Heart and Soul of Hoagy Carmichael" (1999). During this period she also operated a retail business called Crystal's Fine Gifts and Jewelry. Her most recent studio album was released in 2019, and she has continued to tour internationally. Gayle has received one Grammy Award and multiple additional nominations. She has also won five Academy of Country Music Awards, including the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award in 2016, as well as two Country Music Association Awards and three American Music Awards. She has been included in lists of notable country artists by publications and media organizations, including Rolling Stone and CMT. Gayle has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2017.
