About William Russo

William Russo (25th June 1928–11th January 2003) was an American musician and composer. Born in Chicago, he wrote ground-breaking orchestral scores for the Stan Kenton Orchestra in the 1950s, and also composed non-jazz (though often jazz-influenced) pieces, including two symphonies, one of which was premiered by Leonard Bernstein. At the beginning of the 1960s, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he founded the London Jazz Orchestra. He was a contributor to the Third Stream movement that tried to close the gap between jazz and classical music. He returned to his native city in 1965 where he started the Chicago Jazz Ensemble; although a few years later the ensemble was disbanded, it was reformed in 1991, and continues to this day. Russo was also well known as a trombonist and composition teacher. Among his famous pupils was the film composer John Barry.
