About Bigelf

Bigelf is an American progressive rock and progressive metal band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1991. The group has released four studio albums and is known for combining psychedelic, glam, and hard rock influences. Bigelf was founded by Damon Fox and Richard Anton and initially gained an underground following in the Los Angeles music scene. The original lineup featured Fox (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Anton (vocals, bass), A.H.M. Butler-Jones (vocals, guitar), and Thom Sullivan (drums). Their debut EP "Closer to Doom" was recorded in 1995 and released in 1996, co-produced by Sylvia Massy. The release established the band as early contributors to the psychedelic doom movement that helped shape the Los Angeles stoner rock scene. After drummer Steve Frothingham replaced Sullivan in late 1995 and Anton left soon afterward, the band continued as a trio. In 1997 they recorded the album "Money Machine", which was eventually released in 2000 by Swedish label Record Heaven, leading to tours in Scandinavia. Finnish bassist Duffy Snowhill then joined the group, which recorded the EP "Goatbridge Palace" in 2000. During a 2001 tour in Sweden, Butler-Jones fell into a diabetic coma and remained unconscious until his death in 2009. Guitarist Ace Mark replaced him, and Fox became the band’s primary singer and songwriter. Bigelf signed with Warner Music Sweden in 2002 and released the album "Hex" in 2003, earning a cult following in Northern Europe. In 2007 they recorded a cover of John Lennon’s "Mother" with Christina Aguilera for the compilation "Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur". Their 2008 album "Cheat the Gallows", released on Linda Perry’s Custard Records, included the single "Money, It’s Pure Evil". The band toured extensively in 2009 and 2010, supporting Dream Theater on the Progressive Nation tours in Europe, North America, Mexico, Canada, and South America, and also supported Porcupine Tree in the United States. After being dropped by Custard Records, Bigelf went on indefinite hiatus following festival performances in Japan in August 2010. In 2013 Bigelf signed with Inside Out Music and released "Into the Maelstrom", featuring guest drummer Mike Portnoy and guitarist Luis Maldonado. Portnoy and John Wesley of Porcupine Tree also appeared as guest performers during the band’s 2014 European tour.
