About Bernd Cluever

Bernd Gerhard Clüver (* April 10, 1948, in Hildesheim; † July 28, 2011, in Palma, Spain) was a German schlager singer. Bernd Clüver studied law for five semesters at the University of Heidelberg after completing his high school diploma and military service. During this time, he was already dedicated to music. Artistic Career Clüver's singing career began at the Talentschuppen during the 1971 Funkausstellung in Berlin. In September 1971, he signed a record deal with Hansa. His first appearance on the ZDF-Hitparade came in May 1972 with the song Sie kommt wieder. On January 20, 1973, managed by Klaus-Peter Schulenberg, he introduced the song Der Junge mit der Mundharmonika, which became his first number-one hit. This was a German cover of the Spanish number-one hit El chico de la armónica by Micky, released in February 1973. The single sold over 500,000 copies in Germany and more than a million worldwide by 1974. With Der kleine Prinz, Clüver achieved another number-one success in the same year, selling another million copies in Germany. Both songs, written by Peter Orloff, became some of the best-selling schlager hits in Germany. Clüver had two more top-10 hits with Bevor du einschläfst and Das Tor zum Garten der Träume. At the peak of his career in 1974, he also starred in the schlager film Zwei im siebenten Himmel, although it was not very successful. By 1979, he placed four more songs in the charts. In October 1976, Clüver released the single Mike und sein Freund, a German cover of the Rubettes' Under One Roof, which was groundbreaking as it was the first time a German schlager singer addressed homosexuality in a song. Despite reaching number 44 in the charts, Clüver was not allowed to perform it on the ZDF-Hitparade or the show disco, and he had to publicly assure people that he was not "like that." Clüver competed in Germany's Eurovision Song Contest pre-selection twice: in 1983, he placed third with Mit 17, written by Dieter Bohlen, and in 1985, he finished fifth with Der Wind von Palermo. Clüver sold over 10 million records, performed over 5,000 times across Europe, and won numerous awards. He also had a successful career as a radio presenter and worked as a lyricist for himself and other artists. In total, he released 17 studio albums, initially with Hansa, later with Bellaphon, Global Records (distributed by Sony BMG), and finally his own label, Phenomenia Records. His only album released on his own label was Offen & Ehrlich in January 2006. Family Clüver was first married to model Ute Kittelberger, and they lived in Mannheim. Later, he lived with his second wife, Anja Hörnich, Miss Germany 1986/87 and Queen of Europe 1987, in Llucmajor, Mallorca, and Westerstede. The couple divorced in 2011. Clüver died on July 28, 2011, at the age of 63 from injuries sustained after falling down a staircase in Illetes, Mallorca. His ashes were buried in the North Sea on August 19, 2011.
