Bananafishbones is a German band formed in 1987 in Bad Tölz, Upper Bavaria. Some of their best-known songs include "Easy Day", "Come to Sin", and "I Like a Lot". The band was founded in 1987 by Sebastian Horn (born December 2, 1970), Florian Rein (born February 27, 1971), and Thomas Dill. The name Bananafishbones was taken from the song "Bananafishbones" by The Cure, which appeared on the album "The Top" (1984), whose title in turn refers to the short story "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" by J. D. Salinger. After guitarist Thomas Dill left the band due to a stay abroad, Peter Horn Jr. (born August 26, 1961), Sebastian Horn’s brother, joined in 1991. The group’s first performances took place at the Bad Tölz grammar school and in the city’s Protestant parish hall. After winning a band competition in Wolfratshausen, Bananafishbones became regionally known through numerous performances in clubs and venues throughout Upper Bavaria. In 1995, they independently released their debut album "Grey Test Hits". In 1996, the short film "Easy Day" was released, directed by Hans Horn and starring Franka Potente. The accompanying soundtrack was released in 1999 as the "Easy Day EP". The band gained nationwide recognition in 1998 when their single "Come to Sin" was used in a television commercial for the fashion company C&A. Bananafishbones contributed music to several German film productions, including "Drei Chinesen mit dem Kontrabass" (song "What an Ending"), "Auf Herz und Nieren" (songs "Pow Wow" from the album "A Town Called Seven" and a cover version of "Road to Nowhere" by Talking Heads), and "Wer früher stirbt ist länger tot" (songs "Something’s Rising", "What If", "Out of His Mind", "Nowhere to Be Found", and "Big-a-Dog, Big-a-Bite" in collaboration with Gerd Baumann). They also composed large parts of the soundtracks for the film series "Die Wilden Kerle" and appeared in small cameo roles in "Tödliche Verbindungen". In "Die Wilden Kerle 3", they performed as a country band. In 2007, they recorded the song "Räuberlied" for the animated film "Die drei Räuber". Their German-language single "1. FC Sommer" became popular in 2006 when the radio station Bayern 3 used it as an unofficial anthem for the FIFA World Cup. The band cites musical influences such as Ween, Giant Sand, Cake, Eels, Barenaked Ladies, and Talking Heads, as well as artists like Elliott Smith, Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash, and Robert Palmer. Bananafishbones are known for their energetic live performances, playing around 120 concerts per year at times. The songs on their regular studio albums are primarily in English. Since 2001, the band has organized the annual Hillside Festival in Bad Tölz. In 2006, they performed a free concert in the town’s historic market street, where they played "1. FC Sommer" live for the first time. Since the early 2000s, Bananafishbones have also given an annual unplugged concert shortly before Christmas at the Kurhaus Bad Tölz. Florian Rein is the founder and a member of the band The Heimatdamisch, which performs well-known rock and pop songs in the Oberkrainer style. Sebastian Horn was also an early member. The debut album "Highway to Oberkrain" was released in 2015, followed by "Circus Oberkrain" in 2019. Conversely, Rein was part of Horn’s band Dreiviertelblut on their first two albums, "Lieder vom Unterholz" (2013) and "Finsterlieder" (2016), before leaving the group.
