About Backyard Babies

Backyard Babies are a Swedish rock band originally from Nässjö and currently based in Stockholm. The band was formed in 1987 and has released eight studio albums, winning two Swedish Grammy Awards. They are associated with the popularization of sleaze rock in Scandinavia and Sweden. Their single "Minus Celsius" appears as a playable bonus track in "Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock," and "Degenerated" is available as a downloadable song for "Guitar Hero World Tour." The band was initially called Tyrant, consisting of singer/bassist Tobbe (Tobias Fischer), guitarist Dregen, guitarist Johan Blomqvist, and drummer Peder Carlsson. Tobbe was replaced by Nicke Borg on vocals and guitar, with Blomqvist moving to bass. The band changed their name to Backyard Babies in 1989, recording two demos and completing a national tour of Sweden. Their self-released debut EP "Something to Swallow" came out in 1991, leading to a contract with Swedish label Megarock Records in 1993. The debut album "Diesel & Power" was released in 1994, blending rock, punk, and blues influences. The single "Electric Suzy" included a cover of "Taxi Driver" by Hanoi Rocks as its B-side. Following a hiatus during which Dregen joined The Hellacopters, the band reunited in 1997 with a contract with MVG Records. Their critically acclaimed album "Total 13" drew comparisons to the New York Dolls, Ramones, and The Damned. Singles from the album included "Bombed (Out of My Mind)" with the B-side "Rocker," featuring Michael Monroe, and "Is It Still Alright to Smile?" with the B-side "Babylon," which featured Ginger of the Wildhearts and Nicke Andersson. In 1998, the band toured the United Kingdom supporting Alice Cooper. Dregen, Ginger, and Nicke Andersson also formed the side project Supershit 666, releasing a six-track EP in 1999 before Dregen returned to Backyard Babies. The follow-up album "Making Enemies is Good" included singles "The Clash" and "Brand New Hate," the latter co-written with Ginger, and the band toured with Motörhead. In 2002, Dregen was assaulted and injured, but the band continued recording, releasing "Stockholm Syndrome" in 2003, which won a Swedish Grammy. Singles from the album included "Minus Celsius," "A Song for the Outcast," and "Friends." Backyard Babies toured the United States and Europe in 2005 and released "People Like People Like People Like Us" in 2006, produced by Nicke Andersson. Singles included "The Mess Age (How Could I Be So Wrong)" and "Dysfunctional Professional." Their self-titled album was released in 2008, with singles "Fuck Off and Die" and "Degenerated," reaching number 1 on the Swedish albums chart. The compilation album "Them XX" was released in 2009 to mark the band's 20th anniversary. After a hiatus, the band reconvened in 2014. Their 2015 album "Four by Four" reached number 2 on the Swedish albums chart. In September 2018, they performed at the Hard Rock Hell Sleaze festival in Sheffield, England. The band released their eighth studio album, "Sliver & Gold," in 2019. In a 2022 interview, Dregen confirmed that Backyard Babies were on hiatus due to his commitments with The Hellacopters, but indicated plans for future music.
