About Artashes Avetyan

Artashes Avetyan, an Iranian-Armenian composer, and singer, was born on August 14, 1942, in Tehran, Iran. Before embarking on his musical career, Avetyan was an avid football player, representing the Tehran team "Taj." At the age of 14, he began learning the guitar under the guidance of German musician Erwin Mohr. During his school years, he toured various Iranian cities, performing with a musical group, and further honed his vocal skills with the renowned tenor Aram Sargsyan, who had sung alongside the legendary Feodor Chaliapin. In 1963, Avetyan's family relocated to Yerevan, Soviet Armenia, where he pursued formal music education at the prestigious Yerevan State Conservatory, specializing in conducting and composition. His training there laid the foundation for a successful career as both a performer and conductor. For 23 years, Avetyan was a soloist with the Symphony Orchestra of Radio and Television of Armenia, under the direction of Melik Mavisakalyan. He also spent five years performing with the State Pop Orchestra of Armenia, directed by the famed Konstantin Orbelyan, People's Artist of the Soviet Union and the Armenian SSR. Throughout his career in the USSR, Avetyan became a prominent figure in the Armenian music scene, performing and promoting his music sung in Armenian and Persian. In the early 1990s, as the Soviet Union dissolved, Avetyan emigrated to the United States, where he continued his musical career. In the U.S., he became involved in the Armenian diaspora’s cultural activities, mentoring young musicians and continuing to compose.
