About Abdelkader Chaou
Abdelkader Chaou is a brilliant interpreter of Chaabi born in 1941 in Bab Jdid in the Casbah of Algiers. His musical career debuted when he participated in the radio program of Djillali Haddad. Strongly encouraged, he decided to perfect his art by enrolling at the conservatory of Algiers, then directed by Hadj M’hamed El Anka. In 1966, he recorded his first title, "Ya dhou A yani", at Radio Algiers. Two years later, he joined for a short time the National Theatre of Algiers (the TNA), and participated in a gala organized in Shiraz, Iran. His first album featuring "Ghazali Goudami" and "Lilah wan cheftou Koudami" met with immediate success in 1970, but his consecration on the musical scene happened with "Djah rebi ya djirani”. Abdelkader CHAOU was a singer in the 70 thanks to the Mahboub Bati school, with beautiful hit titles such as "Mazal khatmi", "Ya laâdra win moualik " or "Meriem Meriem". Besides, he has a very diversified repertoire that he borrows from the Arabo-Andalusian music, be it melancholic ballads or more cheerful melodies. However, if some of his peers, such as Mahboub Bati, Mahboub Stambouli and Skandrani, recognize him as a major modernizer of chaabi, others do not fail to accuse him of denaturalizing the essence of this music. He is indeed a great virtuoso of the mandolin, and had the merit of introducing new instruments such as the banjo, the piano and the guitar, which allowed him to reinvent the chaabi style. He currently lives between Algeria and France where he continues to work.
