About ATOLS
Formed in 2001, ATOLS is a Japanese electronica, breakbeats, breakcore, and IDM unit consisting of 2 musicians. One of them is a human beat boxer with an established reputation in Japan, a.k.a. better. They fuse warm sound of human voices and acoustic instruments with synthetic sound of digital gadgets to bring a totally new multi colored polyhedron landscape. Their music is all about overwhelming love for inorganic substances; by this love, in turn, they express the admiration to life, humanism, and romance. They are mostly known for their surreal horror project イルカの夢でさようなら / iruka no yumede sayonara. ATOLS / Musical Chronology 1993 (Age 10) Began creating experimental stop-motion animation videos using a video camera and other equipment. 1995 While creating early video art works (a precursor to VJing) based on the concept of visualizing sound, he started to learn electronic music production using cassette recorders and rhythm machines. 1998 With the release of the iMac, he began learning digital painting, CG, and HTML. 2000 Started human beatboxing as a counterpoint to sequenced, programmed music. 2001 Began uploading music under the alias "better" on muzie (BIG UP! FREE). He quickly gained attention for his aggressive electronic sound, primarily rooted in breakcore. 2002 Began performing live at venues like Club Citta in Kawasaki. During this period, he also absorbed a wide variety of musical influences by providing tracks for rock bands on tour and for rappers. 2004 Joined the creative collective "grid-m7," engaging in creative activities across various genres. 2005 Released the original album "Semen in morning that wants to awake…EP" at Design Festa under the grid-m7 name. It garnered attention for its original package design and innovative electronica sound. Soon after, he released "To flexble elemental code…". The style of personally handling everything from jacket design to production methods would later be carried over to the ATOLS/MIKU series. Around this time, his interest in human beatboxing grew, and he performed at various events. He steadily built his career as a beatboxer, performing alongside BEATSICK.JP's HIRONA and TEDDY (TeddyLoid) at grid-m7 events. 2007 Participated as a DJ under the name Atols at the club event "Perfect Izakaya G" hosted by grid-m7. This marked the start of his career as Atols. That same year, he released a CD under the name Atols on SOLSPUREN RECORDS, effectively making his major label debut with his first full album, "Lesson 1". 2008 Entered and won an Excellence Award in the Cornelius "Sensuous" fragments remix contest held by Sound & Recording Magazine. He received praise from the artist, Keigo Oyamada (Cornelius). 2009 Released his second album, "Culture", which presented a new sound fusing electronic and beatboxing. 2010 Start and continues to distributing his music on Nico Nico Douga. Around this time, he changed his stylization to the all-caps "ATOLS". Also in 2010, he solidified his achievements as a beatboxer by placing in the Top 16 at the Japan Beatbox Championship. 2011 Achieved a breakthrough as a Vocaloid Producer (Vocalo-P) with the song "Babel", spreading the name ATOLS nationwide. Around this time, his former group grid-m7 began participating as his management team. This group was later renamed "ATOLS Macaron Studio." 2012 His Vocaloid song "Macaron" became a major hit, solidifying his status as a popular and established Vocaloid-P. 2013 Released his first full album under the ATOLS name, "ATOLS/MIKU", which would later become a series. 2015 Produced and hosted the club event "DENDORA! Ver.0" at Shibuya nagomix. It was well-received as a chaotic event that mixed not only DJs but also art and performance across genres. 2016 Participated as a sound composer on the solo album "ON" by SUGIZO (guitarist of LUNA SEA and X JAPAN), garnering attention for his work transcending the Vocaloid-P genre. Also hosted the sequel event "DENDORA! extream" at Shibuya VISION, drawing a crowd of over 470 people and becoming recognized as a significant movement. Present Currently, he continues to work across various industries as both a Vocaloid-P and sound composer, providing music for game soundtracks and utaite (Nico Nico Douga singers), and collaborating with the pastry maison "Pierre Hermé".
