5 After 4’s distinct musical sound is centered on the beats of Vito Rezza’s solid percussion talents. A virtual legend in the world of percussion having played with artists such as Joni Mitchell, “Big Mama” Thornton and Gino Vanelli, Rezza regularly invites Canadian jazz greats to join 5 After 4 on stage and in the recording studio. The group’s most recent album, Drums of Avila, showcases Rezza’s formidable compositional and technical talents which were first hinted at on the group’s 1992 Juno-nominated album Notorious. The release is a texturally rich, rhythmically sophisticated original work featuring sterling contributions from jazz stars such as Michael Brecker, Toots Thielemans, Joey DeFrancesco and Guido Basso. Other featured artists include Vinnie Colaiuta on the drums, John Goldsmith on piano, Benani Choudhury, Kristy Cardinali and Chris Rouse on vocals, Steve Kennedy on tenor sax and background vocals, Kevin Breit and Rob Piltch on guitar, and producer/arranger Peter Cardinali on bass.
