About Foghat

Foghat are an English rock band formed in London in 1971. The band are known for incorporating electric slide guitar into their music. Their best known song is the 1975 single "Slow Ride". They have released 17 studio albums, including eight gold albums and one platinum, along with a double platinum live album. The band has experienced several line-up changes but continues to record and perform. The original line-up consisted of Dave Peverett on guitar and vocals, Tony Stevens on bass, and Roger Earl on drums, all of whom had previously been members of Savoy Brown. Rod Price joined on guitar and slide guitar after leaving Black Cat Bones. The band name "Foghat" was created by Peverett and his brother in a word game. Their debut album, "Foghat" (1972), produced by Dave Edmunds, included a cover of Willie Dixon's "I Just Want to Make Love to You", a remake of Savoy Brown's "Leavin' Again (Again!)", and "Sarah Lee". Their second self-titled album, sometimes referred to as "Foghat (Rock and Roll)", achieved gold status. Subsequent releases included "Energized" (1974), "Rock and Roll Outlaws" (1974), and "Fool for the City" (1975). During this period, Stevens left the band and was temporarily replaced by Nick Jameson for the recording of "Fool for the City"; he was later replaced by Craig MacGregor. The band released "Night Shift" (1976), a live album in 1977, and "Stone Blue" (1978), all achieving gold certification. "Fool for the City" produced the hit "Slow Ride", and the live album "Foghat Live" reached double platinum status. Other singles included "Drivin' Wheel", "I Just Want to Make Love to You", "Stone Blue", and "Third Time Lucky (First Time I Was a Fool)". Price departed in 1980 and was replaced by Erik Cartwright in 1981. In the 1980s, record sales declined, with "Zig-Zag Walk" (1983) peaking at number 192 on the charts. Bassist changes included MacGregor leaving in 1982, Jameson briefly returning, and subsequent replacements by Kenny Aaronson and Rob Alter. The band temporarily disbanded in 1984 after Peverett returned to England. Earl, MacGregor, and Cartwright reformed with Eric Burgeson as singer and guitarist, with various bassists rotating during this period. In the 1990s, Peverett returned to the United States and formed Lonesome Dave's Foghat. The original line-up reunited in 1993 and released "Return of the Boogie Men" (1994) and the live album "Road Cases" (1998). "King Biscuit Flower Hour" was released in 1999, featuring live recordings from 1974 and 1976. After Price retired from touring, Bryan Bassett joined on guitar. In the 2000s, Peverett died in 2000 from kidney cancer, and Price died in 2005 from a heart attack-related fall. Charlie Huhn joined on lead vocals and guitar, and the line-up of Earl, Stevens, Bassett, and Huhn released "Family Joules" (2003). MacGregor replaced Stevens later in 2005. During the 2010s, the band included Earl, MacGregor, Huhn, and Bassett. Bobby Rondinelli and Jeff Howell temporarily substituted for Earl and MacGregor during health-related absences. The album "Last Train Home" (2010) featured original songs and blues covers, including contributions from Eddie Kirkland. The band released the DVD "Live in St. Pete" (2013), and the fan-funded studio album "Under the Influence" (2016), which reached number 17 on Billboard's Hard Rock Albums chart and number 40 on the Independent Albums chart. They followed with "Live at the Belly Up" (2017). Erik Cartwright died in 2017, and MacGregor, diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in 2015, passed away in 2018. In the 2020s, the line-up of Earl, Bassett, Huhn, and Rodney O'Quinn recorded "8 Days on the Road" (2021). In January 2022, Charlie Huhn retired and was replaced by Scott Holt. The band announced their 17th studio album, "Sonic Mojo", with the first single "Drivin’ On", released on 10 November 2023. In January 2025, Jules Radino temporarily replaced an ill Roger Earl on drums, and percussionist Eddie Lefebvre began appearing on stage with the band.
