About Bruce Dickinson

Paul Bruce Dickinson (born 7 August 1958) is an English singer best known as the lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden. He has performed with the band during two periods, from 1981 to 1993 and from 1999 onward. Dickinson is noted for his wide vocal range and theatrical stage presence. Dickinson began his musical career in the 1970s performing with local pub bands while attending school in Sheffield and later studying at university in London. In 1979 he joined the British new wave heavy metal band Samson, performing under the stage name Bruce Bruce and appearing on two studio albums with the group. He left Samson in 1981 to join Iron Maiden, replacing Paul Di'Anno. His first album with the band was "The Number of the Beast" in 1982. During his initial tenure with Iron Maiden, the band released a number of commercially successful albums throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. In 1993 Dickinson left Iron Maiden and was replaced by Blaze Bayley. He subsequently focused on a solo career, releasing several albums that explored a range of heavy metal and rock styles. Dickinson returned to Iron Maiden in 1999, at the same time as guitarist Adrian Smith. Since rejoining the band he has recorded six further studio albums with Iron Maiden. He has also continued his solo career, releasing the albums "Tyranny of Souls" in 2005 and "The Mandrake Project" in 2024. Dickinson’s cousin Rob Dickinson is the former lead singer of the band Catherine Wheel, and his son Austin Dickinson was the vocalist of the metalcore band Rise to Remain. By 2024 Iron Maiden had sold more than 100 million records worldwide. Outside of music, Dickinson has been involved in a variety of other activities. He worked as a commercial airline pilot for Astraeus Airlines and served as captain of Iron Maiden’s charter aircraft, known as Ed Force One, during several of the band’s world tours. After Astraeus ceased operations in 2011, he founded the aviation maintenance and training company Cardiff Aviation in 2012. Dickinson also hosted a radio programme on BBC Radio 6 Music from 2002 to 2010, presented television documentaries, wrote novels and film scripts, collaborated with Robinsons Brewery to produce a beer, and competed internationally in the sport of fencing.
