About Wywy Brix
Existential P-Funk and techno experiments from Wellington, New Zealand from Wywy Brix, a producer who took up synth and piano after a long and classically DIY stint with his experimental percussion project “Cartoon”. Ending up somewhere between Miharu Koshi and Omar S on his debut electronic release, Wywy Brix steps into dance music as a vehicle for somatic/catharsis/release/healing. “Clear Licorice” uses emotional melodies and repetition to sit on feelings and move the body for a wonky, acid-y take on spirituality stoked on swinging rhythms, romantic vibes and jazz chords. The specific combination of crisp, new age synth textures and melodies with schizoid club visions makes it easy to understand that these tracks were made in part for his iPhone at work. “Plea” harks back to the DIY house show setting with insane and loose ideas about dance music, at once glitzy and mutated. Opener “Bush Walk” is a scratchy textured spiritual communion with trees, the universe and death that segues into ultra wistful and dazed melodies of “Polydactyl”, a track that is perhaps closest to the M.O. of “Clear Licorice”, sincere, innocent and colourfully emo like a sad Bootsy Collin's un-costumed, George Clinton alone in Pak n' Save.
