About van Idle

In summer 2005, after their ship "no pirates" had sunk, Michael and Mies decided to dive into serious songwriting. What began on one hot summer night at the lakeside of Zurich soon became a thrilling experiment of scribbling, fiddling, and trying out melodies. When Ulrich joined them in November 2005, there were already half a dozen of catchy tunes, which lacked only the power and fundament of his bass guitar. In May 2008, Sarah joined the band. She fit in quite fast and well, because this is what van Idle had been successfully doing ever since its birth: making unlike stuff alike. Although they would describe themselves as amateur musicians, there is a professional whiff to these gentlemen and this lady. Ulrich has been a singer in a long list of choirs and plays the bass ever since he has been able to hold it upright. Sarah was forced to study violin since she was eight, but in parallel, she quenched her craving for singing in choirs and theatre ensembles. Mies served as a string artist in several German formations, playing the whole range between progressive rock and beach pop. Michael has been playing various instruments, ending up with the drums when he started to sprout stubbles. The band has been slowly emerging their style: a relaxed fusion of funny little notes, straight rock, serious fun, and friendly instrumental challenges. Their songs carry a message, and it is far beyond the casual "I love you do you love me?" message on the radio. Most material seems to come from a calm understanding of modern life, mellowed by ironic questioning of its meaning and what is sold to us as its purpose. Maybe this sheds some light onto van Idle's work and explains why it is so genuine, honest, and pure. The band had started to record their first album "Blue" in December 2008. The album was released in late summer 2009.
