About syntax::orion

syntax::orion was officially formed around the year 2000 when David and Andre, influenced by the goth/electro club scene at the time, decided to also create music of their own, coming up about at the same time as Nuklear Dawn and Mechanique. With David's experience with tracker software and Andre's previous experience in keyboard playing it didn't took long before the first tracks were created. After a few failed tracks, the first that was worth distributing, Fractal Dreams, started to be played at Limbo club. In early 2001 Mechanique did a remix of the track, adding it a more Tribal House sound. Later that year, more songs were composed and produced: Wound, Journey Far, Orion's Order and iKSodom. Those 4 tracks, along with Fractal Dreams made up the first syntax::orion cd-r demo. Lots of copies were distributed and it was also made fully available for download at MP3.com Near the end of 2001, the project had the opportunity to play live for the first time, in Porto, at Heaven's Club. It was disastrous, but it was also a great milestone nonetheless. Other chances to play live appeared shortly after, at Limbo Club and Rockline, in Lisbon. During the year 2002 four new tracks were composed, Attack Ships, Sofia, Shooting Towards the Sun and Nebula. In December of that year, the first three of those songs were put along with re-recorded versions of Journey Far and Wound in the second demo cd-r release of syntax::orion, entitled Demonstration. The demo was also made fully available for download at IUMA.com Before that, in November 2002, syntax::orion played in a concert headlined by a foreign band, Dioxyde, marking another great milestone for the project. During 2003, a few websites reviewed Demonstration, giving it a moderate score, pushing forward the will to carry on and improve the sound. Unfortunately, the year wasn't very active. A few tracks were started but never finished and there wasn't much time available to dedicate to the project, so it was somewhat put on hold. In late 2003, Andre left the country to pursue his academic ambitions abroad, first with the intention to continue with the project by online collaboration, but since it didn't work out, syntax::orion became a one-man project. 2004 came and with it, a wish to renovate the project's sound. In this year, a collaboration with Cryptus Project resulted in a remix of its song Shut the Door, while Cryptus remixed syntax::orion's song Shooting Towards the Sun. A couple of new songs were composed and in May came an opportunity to showcase them, along with old ones remixed to match the new sound of syntax::orion. Tiago (de_profundiis/ADA) and Jorge (Cryptus/Thermid0r) joined the project to play keyboards live while David took over the vocals. Soon after, a third demo was made in a rush, named WGT Promo '04, featuring the new songs Disconnect and Error, remade versions of the old songs Wound, Fractal Dreams and iKSodom, and a live recording of the new version of Shooting Towards the Sun. The demo was made mainly to be distributed at the Wave Gotik Treffen Festival in hope of making syntax::orion reach a broader audience, but it was also handed to friends and acquaintances back in Portugal. Later that year, syntax::orion joined the RemixWars online community to get to know other projects and gain more experience by remixing works composed by others while always maintaining a unique character in sound. The first song to appear out of this was As Sparks Fly Upwards' Mindtrip, which can be listened to here. Soon after, Alien Produkt's Honour vs Falsehood followed. Around October of 2004, RemixWars launched a contest to make the best songs and remixes submitted to the site available in a double CD compilation. Surprisingly, syntax::orion was selected and had the chance to be featured on both discs, with As Sparks Fly Upwards' Mindtrip on the remixes disc and Fractal Dreams Instrumental on the originals disc. Near the end of the year David once again collaborated with Cryptus, this time playing keyboards for his first ever live-act. In 2005 syntax::orion carried on remixing other works, this time outside of RemixWars. Ayria made available on her site most of the material from her debut album, giving fans the chance to remix her songs. Out of that, syntax::orion remixed Ayria's DOS and the MP3 of the remix was available for download on her site for a while. Soon after, David met one of Re-Move's members online and after a while two remixes of their song Over Again were finished. Throughout this year, lots of new original songs were started to be composed though many aren't still finished, even to this day. Out of all of those, the only song that was distributed, mainly by sending to friends over the internet, was Equilibrium (Raw Mix). Now in the year 2006, new material is being composed and old unfinished songs are being produced, with the plans of making a promotional release later, near the end of the year.
