Somero began studying organ when he was eight but switched to the piano at the age of 12. 5 years later he started to study piano in Switzerland and has had many famous musical advisors. From 1990 Somero has pursued his career solely as a concert pianist. So far he has given over 2000 concerts all over the world, including Australia, Japan, Ukraine, Germany, Sweden, Estonia, Russia, Brazil, Canada and Finland. He was awarded a diploma at the International Music competition in Rio de Janeiro. Jouni Somero's recording career began in 1989 (with Liszt's 12 Transcendental Etudes), after which he has made about 40 recordings for different labels. Somero's wide repertoire includes solo piano works from various European and Russian composers. He has composed a few songs himself as well as made many piano arrangements of orchestral, operetic and pop music.
