About pausemc
Pause leads a generation of songwriters who grew up long enough ago to understand what honest music sounds like, but are current enough to have a grasp on modern tools, software, and sounds. The way he sees it is; “that’s what the new generation of recording artists is all about. No limits and no excuses.” Pause grew up with his roots deep in the burgeoning Bay Area ghetto rap scene. And though his delivery can often be compared to the forefathers of that scene (Scarface, 2Pac, E40) Pause will more likely be caught listening to 50’s Blues singers like Howlin’ Wolf, Bill Broonzy and Sonny Boy Williamson these days. Throughout his turbulent teens, Pause was incarcerated a few times and at one point kicked out of high school and sent to a desert boot camp. Upon return, Pause’s cautious father presented him with a bracelet that said “Pause” on the inside of it. He began to wear it as a reminder to cool down and focus more on his creative strengths. The name stuck. After moving to LA ten years ago, Pause completed his debut album Pacific Rose and inked a deal with INgrooves a year later to distribute the album. Hitting the grind and networking with some of the biggest publishers and licensing companies in town landed Pacific Rose some decent exposure including song placements on major networks (Showtime, CBS, Oxygen) as well as a major spot on the video game Saint’s Row IV. The album’s single “That’s How I Do It” won VH1’s Song of The Year while 2 other standout tracks made the finals and received honorable mentions for 2013’s ISC. Besides that, people just seem to recognize and love the sound of his music. Being entrenched in the LA rap scene has allowed Pause to work with and open up for such notables as Bone Thugs N Harmony, Twista, Lil Flip, Talib Kweli, and Big Daddy Kane. Indie rapper Double K (People Under the Stairs) has appeared on both of his releases and his childhood friend KungFu Vampire calls on Pause to co-headline when he rolls through Hollywood. While his rise through the echelon of West Coast rap seems effortless, the MC is quick to dispel any myths about how easy it is to create your own success. For someone who writes, produces, mixes and often sits in during the mastering of his work, the idea of dropping in the booth to kick out a verse and call it a day is ludicrous. Sessions usually last deep into the night, pushing past the comfort zone to get the right turn of phrase, delivery and tone. The resulting tracks on his newest LP, No Small Order, took months to craft, going over each part with a fine-tooth comb until they reached their full potential. Pause’s explanation is a little more blasé but provides a humorous take on his creative process: “I get stoned and might listen to record that I have recently picked up. If I start catching a vibe, I get stoned again and make the beat. Later, I get stoned and write the lyrics and melody. Then I get stoned and record it. Then I have a drink and listen to it.” Meanwhile he has managed to teach himself how to play the guitar, the keys, the harmonica, the alto sax and the flute and is currently orchestrating the score for a 1940’s swing/jazz era Christmas film.
