History: MAMA. formed on November 28, 2018 in Tokyo, originally emerging as the continuation of MORPHINE. The initial lineup consisted of Mei (命依) on vocals, Kagome (かごめ) and Shiyu (紫游) on guitars, Mana (真) on bass, and Api (あぴ) on drums. From the start, the band positioned itself within a darker, hybrid visual kei sound, combining theatrical intensity with experimental rock structures. In 2019, mama. began releasing material through compilations and early singles, including DJV-dejavu-2 and HYSTERIA, establishing a chaotic and emotionally charged identity. Their breakout track Bokura wa Min’na Shinde Iru。 arrived in mid-2019, followed by increasingly provocative releases such as Aiai Kasa and Waisetsu SENTIMENTAL in early 2020. During this period, the band also leaned heavily into pandemic-era themes with Zenbu CORONA no Sei da! and Ningen Shikkaku. Through 2021, mama. expanded its discography with releases like ASYLUM, Bokura no Byoumei wa 「Ningen」 Deshita。, and AFTER PILLS, while also maintaining a strong live presence at venues such as Shinjuku HOLIDAY SHINJUKU and Takadanobaba AREA. The single Karma was issued in multiple formats across November 2021, marking a key phase in the band’s evolving output. In early 2022, mama. celebrated its 3rd anniversary with the one-man live Tengoku (天獄) at Shibuya CYCLONE, followed by a dense setlist performance later that year at Shinjuku HEIST. Releases such as Meinichi / HAPPY SAPPY FRIENDs, Fukoubutsu, and Kimi no Naka de Umaretai continued to build their catalog. However, December 2022 marked a major turning point when drummer Api departed, leading to a temporary suspension of activities and a brief rebranding phase. At the end of 2022, the band re-emerged under the stylized name MAMA., identifying as a “visual hybrid music” project. In January 2023, drummer Ren joined the lineup, and guitarist Shiyu adopted the name JiMMY, solidifying a refreshed formation. This new era produced releases including BLACK DOG., ANIMISM, and Acid・Room, alongside a tour final one-man at Shibuya Spotify O-West. From 2024 onward, MAMA. continued releasing new material such as MARIA and NOPE., while undergoing further lineup changes, including the dismissal of drummer Ren in October 2024. Despite instability, the band maintained activity with later releases like Doku-iri MILK wa MAMA. no Aji, WITCH??, and CRY MORRY, extending into 2026 and reinforcing their reputation for volatility, reinvention, and sustained creative output within the visual kei underground.
