They chose the name kein, the German word for “no”, as in “There’s no water”, and began rehearsing without playing live shows because they were still missing a drummer. On December 31, 1997, they held their first secret live at Nagoya MUSIC FARM with support drummer Hibiki. In January 1998, Hibiki, formerly of Orphee, officially joined, completing the line-up. On March 18, 1998, kein played their first official live, again at Nagoya MUSIC FARM. On September 23, 1998, the band began their first demotape pre-release tour at Nagoya THE BOTTOM LINE. It rained that day, giving rise to what fans later called the “kein rain legend”, the idea that it rains unusually often when kein perform. The pattern seemed to confirm itself: it rained on September 26 at Nishikujou BRAND NEW, on October 16 at Ikebukuro CYBER, and again at the tour final on October 23 at Esaka BOOMIN HALL. In November 1998, bassist Ritsu left the band. Yukino temporarily switched from guitar to bass, leaving the band as a four-piece with maco, Reo, Yukino on bass and Hibiki on drums. Around this time, they released “Mukuge no Hitsugi” and continued performing, including a rain-soaked live at Kanazawa vanvan V4 on November 18. On January 8, 1999, RUKA began supporting on bass at a live at Nagoya HeartLand STUDIO. It rained the next day as well. On February 13, 1999, kein held a twoman live with Raphael at Nagoya CLUB QUATTRO, where RUKA officially became a full member. Heavy snow fell the following day, adding to the band’s growing weather mythology. A new tour began on March 30, 1999 at Nagoya MUSIC FARM, again under rain. The shows on April 6 in Maebashi, April 7 in Meguro, April 9 in Okayama and April 24 in Kanazawa were all marked by rain, as was May 3 in Sendai. Strong winds accompanied their May 5 live at Nagoya HeartLand STUDIO. The tour final took place on May 26 at Osaka OSAKA MUSE, once more in the rain. On June 4, 1999, the tour Kamigami no Tameiki began at Meguro ROCKMAYKAN. It rained on June 19 in Umeda HEAT BEAT. The tour concluded on July 31 at Nagoya HeartLand STUDIO with their first oneman live under the same title. In August 1999, RUKA left the band, and Yukino permanently took over bass duties. In January 2000, aie, formerly of Lamiel, joined as guitarist. He was already known to members of kein: Hibiki had previously played with him in LAPSE and Another you, and Yukino had also shared time with aie in Another you. With maco, Reo, aie, Yukino and Hibiki, the band entered its final phase. They released “Mourou no Mi” in January 2000 and held the oneman DOXAPRAM on January 28 at Meguro ROCKMAYKAN. On February 14, they played a twoman live titled “IN MY BLOODY VALENTINE” against JILS at Shinjuku LOFT, followed by another twoman with babysitter on April 27 in Hamamatsucho. On June 9, 2000, the oneman tour Kikanshi KANUELE to Jishitsu Ganbou began at Nagoya CLUB QUATTRO, where a CD was distributed free to attendees. The tour continued through Osaka and ended on June 20 at Shibuya ON AIR WEST. That night, the band announced they would disband in August. On August 3, 2000, the members were involved in an accident, and a scheduled live at Shibuya ON AIR WEST and EAST was canceled, replaced by a talk event. On August 21, 2000, kein held their final live oneman “Hajimari” at Nagoya THE BOTTOM LINE. The show was sold out and featured several unreleased songs, including “Love me”, “鍵をかけない部屋”, “カニバリズム”, “私の中の青い雲”, “籠庭”, “People”, “ブルーベジー” and “sabbat”. After that night, kein disbanded. “Hajimari” was later released in November 2000. They held a secret one-day revival on March 16, 2002 at Shibuya ON AIR WEST. Re-union: Twenty years later, on April 1, 2022, a re-recorded version of “『嘘』” was uploaded to YouTube together with the words “August 21st 2022, Beginning”. The announced line-up featured maco, Reo, aie, bassist Yuki and drummer Sally. On May 1, 2022, kein officially resumed activities and signed with Bellwood Records. On August 21, 2022, exactly 22 years after their disbanding, they held their comeback oneman “Hajimari” at Nagoya DIAMOND HALL, followed by another “Hajimari” on October 20 at Roppongi EX THEATER ROPPONGI. In 2023, they embarked on TOUR 2023 “Mukuge no Hitsugi”, beginning on January 12 at Osaka BIGCAT. On May 23, they played the twoman live “endroll 2023 -deadman+kein-” with deadman at Shibuya ON AIR EAST. On August 21, they released “Hakai to Souzou”, followed by “Danro no Kajitsu” on August 23. TOUR 2023 “Hakai to Shisou” started on September 8 in Saitama and ended on October 25 at Ebisu LIQUID ROOM. In 2024, they held “In My Bloody Valentine #01” on February 14 at Shinjuku LOFT and “#02” on February 18 in Nagoya. On March 14, they released the live video “TOUR 2023 ‘Hakai to Souzou’ FINAL 2023.10.25 EBISU LIQUIDROOM”. On September 26, 2024, kein made their major debut under King Records. Reo celebrated his 50th birthday with the anniversary live “GENEALOGIA” on November 3 at Nagoya THE BOTTOM LINE. On November 20, they released the mini-album “PARADOXON DOLORIS”, followed by TOUR 2024 “PARADOXON DOLORIS”, which began on November 23 in Nagoya. In 2025, they continued the “In My Bloody Valentine” series with “#03” on February 14 at Shinjuku LOFT. On July 9, they released the mini-album “delusional inflammation”, and on July 11, kein TOUR 2025 “delusional inflammation” began in Amerikamura DROP. Just like deadman, kein have been highly active since reforming. They have toured extensively, re-released old demos and singles, put out the album “Hakai to Shisou”, a live DVD, and the mini-albums “PARADOX DOLORIS” and “delusional inflammation”, steadily expanding on the legacy they began building in Nagoya in 1997.
