About gumipop

Sometime during the mid-nineties some guys (amongst them Gasman, Pita, Mágnes and Blondie) have started organizing parties after getting fed up with having no place to go and have decent music to listen and dance to. During these early years we have done parties on a random basis to a dedicated but rather small crowd. At the beginning of 2000 the parties were called Loaded (see Primal Scream) and we were playing the indie/britpop hits only on these nights. After a while some of the DJs in the collective started to feel anxious to move on and thus Hysterika, Vibrator and Mágnes started Gumipop in September 2002. Our DJ crew have taken part on concerts, helping out our friends in local groups, indie bands playing after their gigs. Along this we have been helping out another crew of similar DJs called No Fidelity on their Wednesday nights in a small club called Extra. These events have failed to attract bigger crowds and due to the club owners ignorance, the whole thing died down by the end of 2004. Meanwhile Hysterika, Vibrator and Gasman have been busy playing mostly electronic stuff under their new disguise Lollipop. Very soon Gasman started to feel an urge to play some guitary stuff again and with the help of Pita started organizing club nights reviving the long forgotten Gumipop „brand”. From the spring of 2005 the Gumipop nights took place in Natasa B’s downstairs but after some summer failings we have found our new - seemingly final - home in Sark Bar in Klauzal Square. So, slowly but surely we have started up and managed to keep alive the indie feeling in Budapest. Our crew members are are also taking part in the Death Disco and Domino Dancing events each month, organized in Trafo Bar. We have also organized our own nights at the Trafo Bar to complement the Friday nights. On the Friday Gumipop nights we play as a collective, utilizing 3 or 4 DJs from the collective to play from 10pm till 4am, when the bar closes. The first 2 hours is dedicated to a DJ or a special guest who is mostly more experimenting than our usual mix. After midnight the real fun starts as our resident DJs start spinning the latest from the indie scene mixing in some oldies pop, electronic stuff and unusual bits just for good measure. Not so long ago we have started getting bands to play on Gumipop. Besides our „resident” band, Népi Papa és a Haverok, we have also had Moog and EZ Basic playing recently and we plan to continue inviting appropriate - and good - bands to the club every once in a while. A new development is our Wednesday „quiet” night in another small venue called Kiserkel, where we play early from 8PM till around midnight, featuring more laidback, slow and quiet tracks as well as a film or a concert DVD on every occasion. These events take place around every third week and will continue to evolve so stay tuned..... from: http://gumipop.hu/about.html
