csurf is the “secret side project” by Texas native singer/songwriter Colin Padalecki, who is one half of the duo known as Surfaces. About his csurf project, Padalecki writes: “ when i was 14 i was watching mtv (back when there was actually music videos on) and started tripping on how songs were made at the time. i started slowly writing songs while having no idea what i was doing (still kinda don't) and invited people over to see if i could write for them regardless of genre or vibe. i didn't have any sort of music lessons or background growing up but writing came naturally enough to me where it became the place i could vent. growing up in texas, it was always a little intimidating to show people songs i was working on or show designs with pastel colors without being dismissed as "trying to be artsy or different". to me, the roots of surfaces never felt contrived or agenda driven. it always felt like a natural, cooperative, creative release no matter what others thought. i've never really been great at marketing myself or putting myself totally out there so when i started surfaces in high school it felt like the perfect way to start releasing songs/ artwork/clothing i was passionate about. soon enough surfaces became a group, then a brand, then a following, who's success belongs to so many amazing people who have created, assisted, or influenced the music that we've made in all these years. writing songs is still my favorite thing in the world to do and i can't wait to write a million more surfaces songs and see where life takes them all. for a few years now i've been recording songs with vocals of my own that have been tucked away... never really knowing if they should leave the comfort of my studio. i've always been creatively fulfilled with everything that is surfaces but now and then i've been expressing myself a little more in a personal way. if you know me you know i'm shy about my voice but some of these feelings i've started to illustrate finally felt natural enough for me to express on my own. nothing will change from here. you'll just start to receive a little more music than you're used to. all in all, you can just consider this side project as just another escape for me to express myself. love, colin”.
