About Café Funquê

If it's a vigorous mixture of Funk, Rock, Bossa Nova, Samba, Jazz... songs with confiding, ironic lyrics, and an undeniable Brazilian swing... you know Café Funquê has arrived! Café Funquê first got together in mid 2002. Between sips of beer, shots of malt, a drag or two and a thousand dissonant chords, a meeting of minds and music emerged. The experienced musicians of this explosive rock band come from different backgrounds, giving a unique flavor to this high voltage mix. Lead singer Cacau -- aka Lady Acid -- hails from the Rio underground, a well-known DJ on the electro/independent club circuit. Drummer Gabriel Damasceno is a native Californian who studied ethnomusicology and played for years in Rio's carnaval powerhouse, Mangueira. Bass player Flavio Chokito's Brit rock roots are unmistakable, and he’s made a living laying down sixteenth notes with well-known bands in the Rio area, Pic-Nic and Seres. Free jazz saxofonist Gabriel Fomm floats in and out of time and space, quoting bossa nova licks. Genuine guitar hero Felipe Aranha lights the stage on fire with his incredible riffs fine-honed on countless tours with regional rock stars, Cabaret and Hereges. Café Funquê is notorious to rock fans for its electrifying marathon performances at well-known venues in Rio de Janeiro, such as: RioFolia, Fosfobox, Rio Cena Contemporânea, Conversa Afinada, Cinemathêque, and Teatro Odisséia. With 25 original songs rehearsed in both English and Portuguese, and unique versions of songs by Led Zeppelin, Eurythmics, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder, the band always has something new for crowds eager to groove. Finishing up studio recording of their newest hits, the band prepares an 8-week tour of the Southwestern United States. First spot on the agenda – the 2009 edition of South by South West International Music Festival in Austin, Texas, where CAFÉ FUNQUE will perform as invited guest artists.
