Known primarily for his acting (Ichi the Killer, Last Life in the Universe), he tends to identify himself more as a vocalist and artist. He and director Sogo Ishi (Electric Dragon 80.000 V) have founded the band Mach 1.67 together. Asano is currently married to J-Pop songstress Chara.
