About Ylem Empyrean
Ylem is the brainchild of M-A Krieger and D DeVore, founded in Dayton, Ohio in the late '90's. Krieger's experience with folk-ambient experimentation blended so well with DeVore's adeptness at using psychedelic guitar effects that the results seemed effortless and inevitable. Though most of their music is improvised in the studio (drawing a profound influence from the early work of Tangerine Dream (Krieger) and the "Space-jam" sessions of The Grateful Dead (DeVore)), they are known to give a rare show in front of a live audience from time to time. Their compositions range from short musical interludes to epic panoramic expanses combining such varied instruments as flutes, hammered and mountain dulcimers, keyboard and guitar synths, electronic programing, tape loops, tablas, harmonium, and sparing vocal treatments. The name of the band Ylem Empyrean is a combination the scientific term Ylem (EYE-lum): the original matter hypothesized by proponents of the Big Bang Theory to have existed before the formation of the chemical elements; and the mystical term Empyrean (em-PEER-ee-an): which denotes the realm of manifestation beyond the Primum Modile (the most distant of the celestial spheres).
