About William Hine
William Hine (1687–1730) was an English organist and composer best known for his work at Gloucester Cathedral in the early 1700s. Born in Brightwell, Oxfordshire, he trained as a chorister at Magdalen College, Oxford, later moving to London to study with the composer Jeremiah Clarke before taking up the Gloucester organistship around 1711–12. Hine wrote elegant Anglican church music and organ pieces, and after his early death his widow issued a subscription volume of his works, Harmonia Sacra Glocestriensis (1731), preserving several anthems and service music associated with his Gloucester years.
