About Wilberforces
It is from Maurice Gee’s eponymous children’s novel UNDER THE MOUNTAIN that WILBERFORCES draw their name – shape-shifting aliens that have lain dormant for thousands of years, crafting their plan beneath the five volcanoes of the Auckland isthmus... Wilberforces play a hybrid of jangly flying nun pop/grunge meets DC Hardcore and Jamaican Dancehall. They are influenced by bands such as Suicide, Slint, Pere Ubu, Hollow Grinders, 3Ds, The Fall and Fugazi, and solo artists such as Fela Kuti, Mulatu Asahi, The Bug and Warrior Queen. They have toured the North Island Of New Zealand several times. Wilberforces have changed line ups bass player once [Jaimie Kennedy from Surf City] drummers three times, orginally featuring Callum Sleigh [Kong, VHS, Pornosec] first replaced by Jackson Hobbs [ The Stomps, Sharpie Crows]. At the time of writing they are joined on drums by Matt Scheurich [M.C Stormtrooper , The Damsels] .The band also features Thom Burton [guitar and vocals] from Yokel Ono and The Neverends, Chris Varnham [electric piano] from The Midnights, and Emily Littler [guitar and vocals] from Mean Street, now renamed Street Chant. Wilberforces Have two releases, a CD EP titled "Live from the five Volcanoes" and Seven Inch Vinyl [out on Etch Recordings] featuring two songs from their forthcoming album, "Tidal Waves" and Psychik Shok".
