About Whitney Houston

Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American singer, actress, film producer, and model. She was widely known for her vocal ability and was ranked second on Rolling Stone’s list of the greatest singers of all time in 2023. Houston had a significant influence on popular music from the mid-1980s through the early 2000s, particularly in the development of contemporary R&B and pop ballad styles. She was also noted for her crossover appeal and music videos, which contributed to broader representation in mainstream media. Houston began her career as a fashion model and became one of the first Black women to appear on the cover of Seventeen in 1981. At age 19, she signed with Arista Records. Her debut album, "Whitney Houston" (1985), spent 14 weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 and remains the best-selling debut album by a solo artist. Her second album, "Whitney" (1987), topped the Billboard 200 for 11 weeks and made her the first woman to debut at number one on both the US and UK album charts. With her third album, "I'm Your Baby Tonight" (1990), she incorporated a more urban contemporary sound. In 1991, she performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV. Houston expanded into acting with leading roles in "The Bodyguard" (1992), "Waiting to Exhale" (1995), "The Preacher's Wife" (1996), and "Cinderella" (1997). She also produced the film franchises "The Princess Diaries" (2001–2004) and "The Cheetah Girls" (2003–2006). The soundtrack to "The Bodyguard" became the best-selling soundtrack album of all time and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, topping the Billboard 200 for 20 weeks. The soundtrack to "The Preacher's Wife" is the best-selling gospel album of all time. After an eight-year gap between studio albums, Houston released "My Love Is Your Love" in 1998. In 2001, she signed a $100 million recording contract with Arista Records, one of the largest deals in the industry at the time. Her subsequent albums, "Just Whitney" (2002) and "One Wish: The Holiday Album" (2003), were released during a period marked by personal challenges, including substance abuse and her marriage to Bobby Brown. Following her divorce, she returned to number one on the Billboard 200 with her final studio album, "I Look to You" (2009). On February 11, 2012, Houston died at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The cause of death was accidental drowning, with heart disease and cocaine use listed as contributing factors. Her death occurred on the eve of the 54th Annual Grammy Awards and received extensive international media coverage. Houston was one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with estimated sales exceeding 220 million records worldwide. Her first two studio albums and the soundtrack to "The Bodyguard" are among the best-selling albums in history, and she became the first Black artist to achieve three RIAA diamond-certified albums. Her singles include "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)" and "I Will Always Love You", the latter of which is the best-selling single by a woman and has received diamond certification in the United States. She achieved 11 Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles and remains the only artist to have seven consecutive singles reach number one. Houston was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, and the Grammy Hall of Fame. Guinness World Records recognized her as the highest-earning posthumous female celebrity. Her career earnings were estimated at approximately $250 million, and her life and work have been the subject of documentaries and television specials.
