About What's Left Remains
What's Left Remains was formed in December 2006 by school friends Michael Reynolds, Sean Green and Daniel Clark. After recruiting a number of drummers, they finally settled on Ryan Wallace, a 12 year-old jazz-trained drummer from their secondary school. Despite their average age of 14 years old, the band set to work writing and rehearsing, often rehearsing four times a week, swiftly writing around 12 songs under the name Heal. By April of 2007, the band were ready to record some demos before gigging, and so, with the help of local engineer James Horwood and ex-Ambervoid guitarist Scooby, recorded their first 4-track demo . The demo helped them land gigs in their local area, with their first gig being attended by some 300 people. Their popularity in the local area attracted some attention from bands in the inner London area, which prompted them to begin playing clubs and bars, most of which they were thrown out of for being too young right after the show! Unfortunately, the band were recognized as sharing a name with another group, so they changed their name to What's Left Remains. In keeping with this name change, the band began to refine their style, dropping many of their earlier nu-metal influences and exchanging sing-a-long choruses for jackhammer riffs and subtle guitar trickery from classically-trained Sean. After an intensive writing process, which involved Sean bringing in an exhaustive number of riffs that were added to by Ryan and Dan, and matched by Michael's ever-growing collection of lyrics, the band had found a style they could settle on, and after a few practice shows, hit the studio in December 2007, this time opting to work with Dan Abela of Escape Route Productions. These recording sessions on the bitterly cold days leading up to Christmas yielded 'This Cannot Be' and 'Goodbye Tomorrow'. After more relentless gigging, the band hit the studio again in April, this time recording 'Reason' and 'Inside', mellowing out the thrash element of the previous two tracks with a slower, groovier feel that betrayed their earlier material's leanings. Unfortunately, these sessions would be the last with Dan, who left to join local metalcore act Our People Versus Yours (who can be found on MySpace and iTunes). To replace him, the band settled on punk bassist Stuart, and recorded their defining works that October, 'Locusts' and 'Transcendence'. 'Transcendence' marked the first composition entirely by Michael, while 'Locusts' featured more collaborative writing from the band, a skill they had clearly developed with ferocity. The band continued to gig, but travel constraints led to the amicable departure of Stu, and resulted in the induction of Liam Donovan, a mutual friend of the band. Despite developing steadily more progressive and thrash-inflected music, creative and personal differences within the band grew greater than the desire to continue pioneering their unique brand of metal, and thus, in February 2009, the What's Left Remains saga came to an abrupt halt. Michael went on to join Our People Versus Yours as a guitarist (Michael's time in What's Left Remains resulted in a throat disorder, which sadly meant he could no longer perform vocals) , while Ryan, Liam and Sean continued to write music as the Contributors, branching out into funk, country and alternative in the process, although Ryan ceased work with them in early 2010 and Liam and Sean ended their musical relationship in late 2010. Liam is currently working in his Progressive Doom/Sludge metal band Cygnus, while Ryan continues to play with several artists and also as a session musician at SoundLab Studios. We'd like to thank everyone that ever helped us out in the cut-throat world of music, with big shout-outs going to James at SoundLab Studios, Dan at Escape Route Productions, any bands that gave us slots on the bill (Burnt Beneath in particular), and bands that supported us, helping us get those gigs off to an amazing start (especially Burnt Beneath!). Enjoy our music and keep the metal alive!
