About Weiss, Sylvius Leopold

Weiss (1687-1750) was the last great composer of lute music. As a performer, his virtuosity was the stuff of legend: a contemporary and friend of J.S. Bach, he was reported to have challenged him at the improvisation of fantasies and fugues; Bach on the organ and Weiss on the lute. His prolific output is mostly in the form of 'sonatas' or suites.
