About Wartime Sweethearts
Louise Nutting is a Sydney-based singer songwriter and front woman of Wartime Sweethearts, a diverse musical outfit now in the midst of launching debut album Pancake Orion. Pancake Orion is a warm and personal collection of songs with splashes of daring and experimentation. The album comprises performances by Sydney greats Hamish Stuart on drums and Abel Cross on double bass, alongside her primary school recorder, luscious harmonies, rippling keyboards and any hapless household objects she could bend to her creative will. With songs depicting aching melancholy to cheeky jazz serenades sung as a lusty inanimate article of clothing, Nutting’s lyrical style is impressively broad. The common thread through these musical adventures is her expressive and dynamic voice; her soulful vocals are highly palpable whatever the setting. Now mid-twenties and a self-confessed “DIY Bandit,” she has taught herself audio engineering and records from her home in Sydney’s Newtown. Musical influences include Radiohead, Björk, The Beach Boys, Roy Orbison, Ella Fitzgerald and Jeff Buckley, as well as a love of 90s computer game music, swing and medieval fanfare. At age eighteen Nutting studied Music Performance at JMC Academy in Melbourne. Here she honed her unique, moody and melodic writing and performance style.Nutting took to the piano at eight and began to experiment with her own compositions on both keys and guitar. As a teen, she continued songwriting, sending selections to love interests interstate. Nutting teaches singing in Sydney, where she lives with her partner and an inhouse barista. Wartime Sweethearts appears regularly at venues across Australia.
