About Virgilio Marino

Australian/Italian Tenor Virgilio Marino studied Piano at the Australian Institute of Music, Sydney and Voice at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He was winner of the Tenor Award Sydney Performing Arts Challenge and a Dame Joan Sutherland Award, and also Finalist in the prestigious McDonald’s Opera Competition. In 2000 Virgilio attended Mannes College of Music in New York on a scholarship. At Mannes his operatic performances included roles such as Fenton in Verdi’s Falstaff, Prunier La Rondine, Puccini and the cover of Alfredo in La Traviata, Verdi. Virgilio was a Quarter Finalist in the New York Metropolitan Opera Award. He has worked with voice coaches such as Renata Scotto, Regina Resnik, Ruth Flacon, Tony Manoli and Joe Colaneri and completed masterclasses with Richard Miller, Jon Vickers, Fedora Barbieri and Jay Lessinger. In 2001-02 Virgilio made his professional debut at Theater Regensburg in Germany performing the roles of Il Duca di Mantua Rigoletto (Verdi) and Oberon Oberon (Weber) and covering Oronte Alcina (Handel). 2003 took him to Italy for further studies in the Belcanto Repertoire and during this time he performed Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle in Milan with students from La Scala Milano’s Accademia and was a Semi-Finalist in Concorso Riccardo Zandonai, Riva, Italy. Concert work has included major appearances at the Victor Chang Charity Concert, Sydney Town Hall for its then Patron, Princess Diana, Canberra Choral Society, Italian Republic Day Concert at Darling Harbour and soloist for the Miss Italia Quest at the Sydney Opera House. Virgilio includes amongst his concert repertoire Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle and Stabat Mater as well as Handel’s Messiah. In 2006 Virgilio was a member of Opera Queensland’s Young Artist Program and in 2007 his performances included Opera in the Vineyard, Stanthorpe, his debut with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in the Myer Bowl Verdi Concert and La Fanciulla del West, the role of Pinkerton in Simply Opera’s Madam Butterfly at Parramatta Riverside, the Food of Love Tour and Alfredo in La Traviata for the re-opening of the Majestic Theatre, Pomona, both for Opera Queensland, and Dead Man Walking, in Sydney. Forthcoming roles include Monostatos and 1st Armed Man The Magic Flute, Count Almaviva Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Pong Turandot, all for Opera Queensland, Opera at Brookfield for Brisbane Festival and returns to Melbourne Symphony for Verdi Requiem and for Enescu’s Vox Maris.
