About Victor Wittgenstein
Victor Wittgenstein (1886-1961) was a noted American pianist of the early 20th century. He was born in Louisville Kentucky, was trained as a pianist in New York City with Edward McDowell and Rafael Joseffy, and in Europe with Varette Stepanoff. He returned to teach and concertize in the US, where one of his students was Aaron Copland for two seasons around 1917-1918, who reportedly described his teaching as "not very memorable." He also recorded several titles for Duo-Art and four early Ampico titles, including a three-roll 1915 recording of Camille Saint-Saens 2nd piano Concerto Op. 22 in G-Minor, with the first movement Andante Sostenuto shown in this video. As in most reproducing piano roll recordings of concertos, his performance includes both the solo piano part and a piano reduction of the orchestral score. The piano is a walnut artcase 1928 Knabe 5'8" very late Ampico A, that was owned by the Metropolitan Opera until the 1950s, and restored in late 2011 at Historic Pianos for its new owner in Montana. The roll is a high-quality, modern recut of the original Ampico roll # 53717.
