Vento do Norte is a unique ensemble of young, talented musicians from around the world. They play saxophones of all shapes and sizes, and offer a richly varied repertoire that ranges from Bach to James Brown. All played from memory. The group is a musical revelation - a rapturous experience that touches the soul one minute, and brings the house down the next. As far as Vento do Norte is concerned, playing the saxophone is all about bonding emotions with air. The group was formed in 2005 by Henk van Twillert, internationally renowned saxophonist who teaches at the Amsterdam Academy of Music and the College for Music and Performing Arts in Porto (Escola Superior de Música e das Artes do Espectáculo). The ensemble is based in Portugal, from where it is rapidly conquering the world: from festivals and theatres in Southern Europe to stages in Caracas, Venezuela. Vento do Norte has worked with famous musicians, including Claude Delange and Mario Marzi. In early 2007, the group was invited to play a series of concerts in Brussels and Antwerp to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the European Union. It also performed during the Liberation Day celebrations in Amsterdam several weeks later. Vento do Norte’s members come from Venezuela, Colombia, Portugal and the Netherlands. The highly talented musicians are all taught by Henk van Twillert, and have all won many international competitions. As a group, they continue to win one prize after another. In 2007, they were awarded first prize at the prestigious Concorso Internazionale di musica da camera ‘Città di Chieri’ in Italy, arguably their greatest achievement to date. Vento do Norte consists of wilful, young musicians who combine a modern vision of chamber music with compelling interpretations. The group plays unique adaptations of Bach, Beethoven and Mendelssohn, transforms melancholic fado music, stirs up rousing tangos by Piazzolla, and enriches the laden soul of James Brown. It is currently producing its first CD/DVD. Versatile, competent, passionate and sincere. Vento do Norte brings together a new generation of musicians, who produce their own unique sounds and leave an indelible impression. The ensemble plays on Yamaha saxophones, and will perform in the following cities during the upcoming Yamaha Pro Custom Sax Tour Benelux 2008: Antwerp, Diest, Brussels, Pétange, Nijkerk, Muiderberg, Amersfoort, Deventer, Rotterdam, Bunschoten, Amsterdam and Loosdrecht.
