About Unknown Instructors
A self-described "punk-jazz-rock-experimental" group, Unknown Instructors match the legendary Minutemen rhythm section of bassist Mike Watt and drummer George Hurley with Saccharine Trust guitarist Joe Baiza and poet and saxophonist Dan McGuire in an inspired battle of hyper-advanced musical wits. Their first album, The Way Things Work, was released in 2005 by Smog Veil Records and featuring additional guest vocals from Saccharine Trust associate Jack Brewer, the Unknown Instructors' The Way Things Work album disguised a carefully structured examination of Dadaist concepts behind a façade of free-form improvisation, the likes of which might put a smile on the faces of both Captain Beefheart and John Coltrane. (allmusic.com) Their second album, The Master's Voice was released March 20, 2007 also on Smog Veil. In addition to the core group of Watt-Hurley-Baiza-McGuire, vocals on several tracks were contributed by David Thomas of Rocket From The Tombs and Pere Ubu, and on one track by painter and renaissance man Raymond Pettibon.
