About Turab
In 2004 seven musicians living in Palestine came together to form the music group Turab ("Soil" or "Earth" in Arabic). Their vision is to create an original Palestinian sound and translate into music the complexities of politics, resistance, poverty, love, and daily life in present-day Palestine. Turab's songs tell the story of Palestinians, their connection to their homeland, and their struggle for freedom and justice. Turab's style is influenced by a variety of musical traditions, including Arabic, reggae, Latin and jazz, among others. The resulting fusion is a unique sound that makes for an unforgettable musical experience. Audiences are delighted by the catchy, "pop" sounding tunes of the songs, while at the same time touched by the deeper meaning of the words. The lyrics of the songs were adapted from poems written by contemporary Palestinian poets, set to original scores composed by the group's founder, Basel Zayed. The group's debut CD, "Hada Leil" was recorded and produced in June 2006 with support from the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC). Consisting of twelve tracks, the CD is an important contribution to contemporary Palestinian music, and has gained acclaim both locally and internationally. Turab performances draw large audiences and enthusiastic media reviews, leading many to call the group's music "the new sound of Palestine." Please find more on the artist's website: Turab
