About True Key

Formal training in any creative area is thought to combine the benefit of honing raw talent with the ironic drawback of stifling creativity. The regime of formal education certainly produces its fair share of pupils dedicated to the simplicity and internal consistency of theory, despite the deficiency of theory in the outside world. Under these circumstances we are occasionally surprised by individuals like Matthew Pietrucha who are able to allow their formal training to inform their work, while avoiding the rigidity and staleness that frequently result from a strict adherence to tradition. His music possesses the sensibility of those rare thinkers who choose to grapple with a long-standing problem by turning it on its head. More personally, his newest EP represents a new direction is his work---you'll notice the album is all but devoid of vocal accompaniment. You should also notice depth, complexity, and subtlety beyond any of his prior work under the True Key name. His disposition towards contrast is apparent, not just in the final track selections, but within the individual tracks themselves. His music is a striking mix of dream states and pure energy, and his sensitivity to both light and darkness yields an album that exhibits variation without inconsistency, contrast without contradiction. As a result, "I Want To Believe" is as appropriate on a late-night cab ride through Manhattan as it is on a trip outside the galaxy.
