About The Poconos

The Poconos was a short-lived Hoboken, NJ band consisting of Mike Appelstein and Tami Heaton, with occasional help from Chris McFarlane on drums. They formed in 1996, played a bunch of shows and recorded some tracks in 1997, and broke up the next year. Jigsaw Records released their only 7", Days Are Getting Shorter, in the spring of 1999. They were part of a small group of friends/bands from the greater NYC area that included Kumari, The Receptionists, The I Live The Life Of A Movie Star Secret Hideout, Mad Planets and Best Wishes. Neither Mike nor Tami formed another band, although Mike released some solo four-track recordings under the Automat project name. Two of their unrealized goals were to play Maxwell's and open for the Cannanes. A few years after they split, another band called The Poconos - from Jersey City, right next to Hoboken! - did both on the same night. At least someone got to live the dream.
