About The Montgomery Clifts
Formed in the short, damp summer of 1986, The Montgomery Clifts (Andy Bevan, Jeremy Purches, Myles Crampton and Dave Burbidge) decided that the only way to hear decent pop music was to write it themselves. Thus, armed with a pocketful of pop gems, they made their shambolic debut in downtown Bristol, resurfacing at 6am on a winters morning at an open-air free festival in Cornwall, collecting and discarding various horn sections, string sections, backing vocalists and cellists, before picking up Bill Bell on a free transfer from the Blue Aeroplanes and heading for London (via Hull!). A charismatic demo tape and a string of live dates resulted in Capitol Radio play and Native Records stealing the band from under the proverbial noses of the major labels. The resulting album, Deadwood Chronicles, was recorded in London with Creation in-house producer Ian Shaw and released on Native Records in 1990. The line up was: Andy Bevan - Vocals, guitar Jeremy Purches - Guitar Myles (“Bill”) Crampton - Bass Dave Burbidge - Drums Bill Bell - Mandolin, fiddle, percussion, harmonica & backing vocals
