The Broadside Singers

About The Broadside Singers

The Broadside Singers was, for practical purposes, Sis Cunningham and whoever was available for the performance or recording. Sis was the publisher of the topical song magazine Broadside. She also wrote the song "How Can We Keep On Moving Unless We Migrate Too?" and many others. Sis sang, played guitar and piano and is playing accordian in the most common photo of the Almanac Singers with Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Bob Dylan was one of the original editors and his "Blowing In The Wind" was the first cover song for the magazine. Smithsonian-Folkways Recordings has issued a five CD boxed set "The Best of Broadside" -- check out the list of singers, it is reasonable to assume most of them were "Broadside Singers" at one time or another, but this would not be a complete list. "I don't suppose anybody kept track of who was singing backup or choruses on any of the Broadside recordings so 'Broadside Singers' became a catchall name for the 'group.' Any of us who were included in Sis Cunningham's musical embrace were pleased and proud." (Thom Parrott, occasional Broadside Singer)
