About The Jato
The Jato would be better described as an idea rather than a meaning. The Jato is David Sponaugle on vocals and guitar, and Booth White on drums. The idea would not have been possible without the sequence of musical and personal events that have taken place in the past few years for these two friends. The two had played in a previous group by the name of "Open, Parachute!" and performed as a Quintet. This band was known for having a very energetic live show and an "epic" sound. The group released two albums in their time, and eventually decided to separate in 2007 after a two year run. This was a very important band to the duo and not only helped develop their musicianship, but allowed them to enter and learn about the music industry. After the separation of Open, Parachute!, David moved to Victoria, B.C. from his Hometown of Nanaimo B.C. to take over as second guitarist for the group "Italian Edition". This group had been going strong prior to David's arrival, and they asked if he would join when the decision of Open, Parachute! parting ways went public. After assisting Italian Edition with their second full length release, the group toured across canada in support of the album. Shortly after the tour was completed, the band decided to go their separate ways. Throughout the years, David has also collaborated with many people from session work to stage, whether it be hip hop, film scores, or other various recording projects. David is currently playing with Victoria hardcore band "Vegan Holocaust", a new-wave throwback project titled "Pod of Orcas", and an original project created by some of Italian Edition's past members tentatively titled "Brazen Bull", and also recording friend and past band-member Chris Arruda's solo work. When Open, Parachute! originally split, Booth was also trying to find his musical niche. He first played with Nanaimo group "Johnny good" for some time. Afterwards, he found himself attending countless auditions trying his hand at various styles of music, looking to constantly expand as a musician. Booth found a couple of projects that he very much enjoyed and is still a part of, such as Nanaimo's "Wilson Pascoe" and Victoria's "Counting Heartbeats". Booth has also been credited on various projects over the last few years as a session musician. He continues to collaborate with others on a regular basis. Both David and Booth shared the mutual goal of launching an original project from the ground up after the break up of Italian Edition. It was at this point, that David first contacted Booth about creating a new group, and The Jato was formed soon after. Booth had primarily been a drummer on his projects, and David had focused on guitars and keyboards on his projects. David decided to take on lead vocals for The Jato as well as guitars and keyboards, while booth took on the role as the drummer. Over the years, both David and Booth had become more interested in different types of music, and are now incorporating these new ways of thinking into creating an original and exciting sound. The following quote would best describe what the future holds for The Jato, as told by David: "Music, first and foremost needs to be fun. It needs to be fun for yourself and it needs to be fun for everyone watching and listening to you. If you expect people to grab your records and support your shows, you'd better have something to offer them... something original. I think the goal here is to take everything we've learned and accomplished, and use the experience to develop something unique and meaningful for not only us, but anyone that wants to come along with us. We're definitely focussing more on the live show and hope to eventually do our best to recreate that same sound on future recordings. I'd like to think that Booth and myself have been a part of some really interesting projects that people have enjoyed, and it's just too much fun for us to ignore. We're more fired up than ever, and we still have quite a few pairs of pants to rock off. Our increasing interest for electronic and experimental music will hopefully become more apparent as the project unfolds, but we will always have rock & roll on the brain. We've got a few new toys this time around as well so it should be interesting either way. When the time is right, we'll be dropping hefty musical bombs in every town we possibly can. We're definitely doing this for the vibes that both the music and the people have given us in the past, and we hope that we can send those vibes right back. We can't wait to get back on stage together."
